ACUF wants to ensure that law enforcement has the tools to go after major drug dealers. But too often, our police and prosecutors overuse civil asset forfeiture, often times relying on forfeiture funds to pad their budgets. Civil asset forfeiture allows the government to take a citizen’s property based on the mere suspicion that it is connected to a crime. To get it back, the burden falls on the owner (at his/her own expense) to prove otherwise. Last September, the US House of Representatives unanimously voted to put reasonable restrictions on asset forfeiture.
