Washington, DC, February 22, 2017 – The American Conservative Union Foundation will be hosting two major panels on criminal justice reform at ACUF’s annual Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC 2017: Prosecutors Gone Wild and Conservatives Leading the Way on Criminal Justice Reform in State Capitals.
Prosecutors Gone Wild will address the problem of prosecutorial misconduct and the need for greater accountability in our justice system. Moderated by Pat Nolan, ACUF’s Director of the Center for Criminal Justice Reform (“CCJR”), the panelists include:
- David Keene, Opinion Page editor of the Washington Times and NRA Board Member;
- Sidney Powell, Former Justice Department Trial Attorney and author of Licensed to Lie: Exposing Corruption in the Department of Justice; and
- Kevin Ring, President of Families Against Mandatory Minimums and author of two biographies of Justice Anton Scalia, Scalia’s Court and Scalia Dissents.
Prosecutors Gone Wild is scheduled for the main CPAC stage on Friday, February 24th from 11:20- 11:55am, immediately following remarks by President Donald J. Trump.
The second panel, Conservatives Leading the Way on Criminal Justice Reform in State Capitals, will focus on the progress being made at the state level on reforming the criminal justice system. From Texas to Ohio, from Alaska to South Carolina, Conservative leaders are not just talking about criminal justice, but acting to reform the system. Governors are working to implement “smart-on-crime” policies that save taxpayer dollars while lowering crime rates and maintaining human dignity.
The state panel will be moderated by David Safavian, the Deputy Director of the Center for Criminal Justice Reform. Panelists will include:
- The Hon. Julie Emerson (R-LA), Louisiana State Representative and Member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
- Marc Levin, Policy Director of the Right on Crime Coalition; and
- Pat Nolan, Director of the ACUF Center for Criminal Justice Reform and a former state legislator from California;
The state panel will take place in the Potomac 5-6 Conference Room on Friday, February 24th from 4:15-5:15.
